So, what is a “footbed” anyway? Technically, it’s an insole, used to provide support, cushioning and overall comfort while you’re wearing the shoe. You may have noticed that it’s starting to become industry-standard across the footwear business to call sandals that have a similar look to Birkenstock’s classic sandal “footbed sandals”. Birkenstock considers themselves the original “footbed” sandal, touting the anatomically correct and ergonomic insoles on their sandals as the “original”, contoured footbed – and there’s a lot of research behind them to back-up the benefits the footbed provides.
Many companies have since jumped on the Birkenstock bandwagon, creating new versions of the much-loved look. We love the classic Birkenstock style, but they often come with a hefty price-tag.
